How to Celebrate MIOSM

Last week I shared some ways to celebrate MIOSM. This week I'll add to those ideas with some QUICK lesson ideas that you can implement with NO PREP!
IDEA 1: MARKET MIOSM
Publicity is a key factor in making everyone aware of the celebration. So how can you do this without paper or prep? Hmm....how about having your students sing on the morning announcements? It doesn't matter what song, just have them sing or play something. You could choose a grade level and let them sing on Friday's during March. Or you could choose a class to sing every day (that sounds hard to me), or you could just do it on one day in March.
I like to take my students down to the office and perform for the office staff.
Got a school song? How about one morning where the whole school sings a song together?
How about sharing your feelings on the morning announcements?
Play classical music over the loud speaker in the morning.
IDEA 2: Teach and Discuss why Music in our Schools is so important.
There are several free lesson plans at this site that integrate reading, writing and music.
MUSIC AND LITERACY IDEAS
RELEVANT LESSONS
You don't always need to have a "printable" to have a successful lesson. Maybe you want to spend just five minutes of class doing a quick activity about MIOSM because they are working on a program. How about a mini-lesson on Movie Music? You could demonstrate this by showing some clips of movies without the music (just mute it:). Then watch the clips with the sound. Ask the students to compare and contrast with music and without.
Ask the students to share their ideas about how the music affects the emotions and drama of the story.
HOW DOES THE MUSIC MAKE ME FEEL?
WHY DOES THE MUSIC HELP THE STORY OR DRAMA?
DISCUSS THE DYNAMICS OF THE MOVIE MUSIC.
IS IT LOUD? WHY?
IS IT SOFT? WHY
FAST, SLOW, LEGATO, STACCATO?
You can have a lot of fun using these questions in your classroom. One thing I do is to have my students share their ideas with each other instead of a whole group discussion. It's called PAIR AND SHARE. I'll have them all stand up and I'll say; "Find one person to share one idea. When you hear the drum, switch." I'll do this three times. I walk around the room and listen in on what students are saying. The students love to talk and this is a fun way for them to share their feelings. I might even have a couple of them write their ideas on the board.
IDEA 3: Composition and/or Song Writing Activities or Contests
Sometimes I like to begin class with an ice breaker activity-I like to mix it up because it keeps the students on their toes. How about passing out rhythmic pattern cards to students as they walk into the room. Then ask them to create a chant using some key words you've put on the board. If you have more time, draw a circle map and let the students brainstorm first. Or just put these questions up on the board and let students answer them in the chant.
WHY DO I LIKE MUSIC?
WHAT'S MY FAVORITE KIND OF MUSIC?
WHY IS MUSIC IMPORTANT TO ME?
WHY DOES MUSIC MAKE ME A BETTER PERSON?
After students have had a chance to create their chants, sit in a circle and share them.
IDEA 4: Bulletin Board Decor
Another idea is to just have a pen and paper available and let students write little notes about why they like music. Then I choose some of them to put on the bulletin board.
IDEA 5: Hold special performances during the month to highlight MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS.
Instead of performances that are planned, take some of your classes through the hallways caroling. Check with classroom teachers to make sure there's no testing during the time you want to go caroling. Pick songs that your students know.
If you want some Printables, here are some posters I made with some writing activities.
